Samsung takes another cue from Apple and launches home repair service

After following Apple's lead and removing the charger from its smartphone boxes, Samsung is once again following its competitor's lead by offering an in-home repair service. However, the approach is somewhat different.

Good news for owners of Samsung products, the South Korean manufacturer has teamed up with parts specialist iFixit to launch a home repair programme. There's no expensive kit of specialised tools or complicated procedures like Apple's, but rather iFixit's simplified repair guides and tools for fixing your phone yourself.

Aspiring repairers will also be able to benefit from detailed tutorials and advice from the iFixit community on how to replace the glass or back of their smartphone. Replacing the charging port is also one of the repairs on offer. The parts they get will of course be official as Samsung is the initiator of the programme.

Used parts can be returned to the programme's repair specialist for recycling at no cost.

An offer that will grow

For the time being, Samsung's self-repair programme is only planned for the United States, but there is nothing to say that it will not be rolled out internationally. iFixit parts can be ordered worldwide. However, the guides proposed concern the American versions of Samsung products. If the latter were to extend its programme, in Europe for example, it would have to adapt its catalogue to the architecture of the devices.

It should be noted, however, that the proposed repairs mainly concern problems related to product wear and tear or accidents. The Galaxy S20 and S21 are the first references of the programme - all variants included - as well as the Galaxy S7+ tablet, but Samsung assures that other devices will be able to benefit from the repair programme. New options will also be offered. The Galaxy S21 charging port replacement kit costs $66.99 and the Galaxy S21 Ultra screen and battery cost $239.99.
